Catahoula Bulldogge

History

The Catahoula Bulldogge is known as a "designer breed" dog. This means that they are not a pure bred breed. For instance, the Catahoula Bulldogge is 50% American Bulldog, 50% Lousianna Catahoula Leopard Dog bloodlines. When considering this breed, it is important to research both of these bloodlines to find out possible health issues, temperaments and special notes to inform yourself of what the possibilities are for owning this breed, life long. This breed has actually been around for longer than most "designer breeds", and is quite popular in the United States. When inquiring about this breed with a specific breeder, be sure to find out if the puppies are 50/50 or 75/25, as some breeders can choose to breed a Catahoula Bulldogge mix to a purebred American Bulldog, or vise versa, thus making the puppies not a full 50/50 Catahoula Bulldogge.

Appearance

The Catahoula Bulldogge is a large breed dog with males and females generally measuring 24-26 inches in height and weighing 75-100 pounds in weight. This breed has square shaped head, with rounded edges where their two ears are folded down alongside of their face. Their muzzle is broad and rectangular in shape. Their eyes are medium in size, round and available in ice blue, green, yellow, amber, brown and black, as well as all shade variations and combinations of these colors. Their general body build is broad, muscular, lean and powerful in appearance. Their coat is tight to the skin, short and single layer. Their coat is available in all colors and color combinations, including merle. Their tail is medium in length, thick at the base and tapering to a point.

Temperament

With breeds that are not purebred, such as the Catahoula Bulldogge, each puppy is typically individually his or her own. Their temperaments can vary. In general, when properly socialized and enrolled in early obedience classes, this breed can do extremely well in most homes, including ones with growing families. This breed is generally protective, loyal, loving, playful and obedient. This breed requires an owner who is firm, consistent, uses positive reinforcement training methods and is able to remain pack leader at all times.

Grooming

This breed sheds daily. Daily brushing and bathing when needed.

Special Notes

This breed requires a properly fenced in yard or proper fitting leash and harness at all times while outdoors. Please fully research the Catahoula Bulldogge breed prior to adding one to your family to ensure you are able to both physically and financially care for your new addition life long. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
