Breed Name: Catalonian Sheepdog

History

Originating in Europe hundreds of years ago, the Catalonian Sheepdog was specifically used for herding livestock, guarding livestock and helping with farm duties. This breed is considered a rare breed in the USA today and it is unknown which exact bloodlines created the Catalonian Sheepdog.

Appearance

The Catalonian Sheepdog is a medium to large breed dog with males and females measuring 17-19 inches in height and weighing 45-60 pounds in weight. This breed has an oblong shaped head, forming into a long rectangular muzzle with a scissor bite. Their ears are large in size, and hang alongside of their face. Their eyes are hidden under their long coat of hair, however they are almond in shape, medium in size and available in a light hazel to dark brown in color. Their general body build is long, rectangular and broad in appearance due to their long coat of hair covering their body. Their tail is medium in length, thicker at the base and tapers to a point. Generally carried low and outwards, and covered in hair. Their long coat is a double layer coat, wavy in appearance and soft to the touch. This breed is available in black, to tan in color and all shade variations in between.

The Catalonian Sheepdog is a protective, loving, loyal and a friendly breed that is great for most families. This breed learns easily and is eager to obey. They require a firm and confident owner who is able to remain pack leader at all times. This breed is best suited for a country living environment where they are able to preform daily jobs and tasks, have much physical and mental activity in order to remain happy and healthy.

This breed requires daily brushing and bathing when needed. Regular professional grooming required.

Special Notes

This breed is not meant for everyone. Please fully research the Catalonian Sheepdog prior to adding one to your family to ensure you are able to provide a life long commitment both physically and financially to your new family member. A properly fenced in yard or proper fitting harness and leash is required at all times while outdoors. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
