History

Bloodlines show that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is related to the Schipperke, Keeshound, Pomeranian, Samoyed, Chow Chow, Norwegian Elkhound and Finnish Spitz. Allegedly, this breed can be traced back as far as 1107 AD and is one of the oldest breeds used for herding. Today, they are still used for herding and working dogs on farms as well as companions.

Appearance

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has an unusual appearance compared to other breeds. Built long and low to the ground, this breed is built hardy and stocky. A triangular shaped face forming into a severe scissor bite, with two large and firm triangular shaped ears standing tall on their head, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi always has two round dark brown eyes. Both male and females typically measure 10-12 inches in height and weigh 25-30 pounds in weight. This breed as a double layer coat that is thick and weather resistant. Their coat color is available in red, fawn, black and tan and at times their coat has white markings.

Temperament

This breed does tend to bark a lot more than other breeds, and for this they make a great watch dog for any home. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is wonderful with children of all ages, the elderly and other pets as long as he or she is raised along side of them. This breed is very intelligent and strong minded so it is important that they have a firm and confident owner who uses only positive reinforcement training methods. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an active breed and needs to have a good daily walk as well as other play time with his or her family to encourage a healthy well being both physical and mentally. If not receiving enough activity this breed will become anxious which will result in ill full behaviors. This breed is suitable for both apartment and country living settings.

Grooming

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi requires daily brushing and bathing when needed. This coat sheds heavily every 6 months.

Special Notes

Please note that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is prone to back issues and weight gain. It is highly recommended that you fully educate yourself about the breed prior to adding one to your family to ensure this is the correct breed for you and that you are able to make a life long commitment both physically and financially. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
