Miniature Shar-Pei

The Miniature Shar Pei is a fairly new breed. This breed is the result of selective breeding from standard size Shar Pei males and females over generations of picking the smallest adults. Their health, personalities and appearance is generally very alike to standard size Shar Pei's.

The Miniature Shar Pei is a medium sized breed with males and females measuring under 17 inches in height and weighing up to 40 pounds in weight. This breed has a very rectangular shaped head, with wrinkles covering their face. Their two small ears are triangular in shape and gently fall alongside of their head. Their two eyes are surrounded with wrinkles, oval in shape and generally a light amber to dark brown in color. Their general body appearance is shorter, stocky and broad. Their tail is curled and carried over their back. Their coat is very thick, short and slightly harsh to the touch; available in all solid colors.

The Miniature Shar Pei is a very loving, loyal, obedient dog that enjoys being close with their owner and is generally quiet and calm when indoors. This breed is a good watchdog and is naturally suspicious and reserved with strangers. This breed requires an owner who is able to remain pack leader at all times, as well as provide early socialization and obedience classes. The Miniature Shar Pei can do well with children and other dogs that he or she is able to grow up around. In general, the Miniature Shar Pei does not do well with other dogs that he or she did not grow up with in the same house. This breed typically does not like any type of water.

This breed requires daily brushing and bathing when needed. We recommend dry shampoo and wiping down this breed due to their fear of water.

Special Notes

Please fully educate yourself about the Miniature Shar Pei prior to adding one to your household. A lot of owners have skin reactions to the Shar Pei hair, this is something to look into for your family members prior to adding one to your family permanently, perhaps meeting other Shar Pei's to see how you and your family members react to their coat since this is a common effect. This breed is prone to skin allergies and issues, and at times kidney failure. A properly fenced in yard or properly fitting harness and leash is required at all times while outdoors. Do not add a Miniature Shar Pei to your family unless you are able to provide life long physical and financial care. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
