Perro de Pastor Mallorquin

History

Due to the Perro de Pastor Mallorquin being a rare breed of dog and never gaining an immense amount of popularity back in history, there is very limited, factual information of the breed, how it originated or who was even the first to find the need to create the breed. However what information we do have, is matter of fact. The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin originated in Europe though the exact year is unknown, and this breed has been and still is being used all throughout Spain as a general farm dog and herding dog.

Appearance

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin has a very wedge shaped skull that directly forms into a severe scissor bite muzzle. This breed only is available in a true, solid black with medium to short length hair. A double layer coat with much thickness to it to protect this breed while working outdoors all year round. A striking characteristic of the breed is their eyes, available in a golden/orange color that is absolutely gorgeous. This breed is a large sized breed, built tall, slim and for endurance on farm land. Both males and females measuring an average of 26-28 inches in height, and both weighing in on an average of 75-88 pounds in weight.

Temperament

The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin is not a breed meant to be kept inside or just for companionship. This breed needs a job to do during the day, and for most of the day. The Perro de Pastor Mallorquin would only do best on a farm environment, and in an adult households without any small pets or other dogs. This breed requires a firm, consistent and confident owner who uses only positive reinforcement training methods and who is able to continually find a job for this breed to complete. A long daily jog as well as other outdoor activity is required. It comes highly recommended that this breed gets enrolled in agility courses and other dog competitions or activities to ensure a proper amount of exercise both mentally and physically every day.

Grooming

Daily brushing and bathing when needed. This breed is an average shedder.

Special Notes

Please fully educate yourself about the Perro de Pastor Mallorquin prior to adding one to your family to ensure that you are able to provide proper care, training and space for this breed for a life long commitment to your new addition. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
