Shiba Inu

History

Developed in Japan, prior to the 1900's, the Shiba Inu is a small and compact breed that was bred to hunt wild game. This fierce breed was created by crossing the bloodlines of native Japanese dogs. This breed can hunt, track, guard, preform tricks and compete in agility competitions.

Appearance

The Shiba Inu is a medium sized dog breed with males and females measuring 13-15 inches in height and weighing 16-25 pounds in weight. Their head is wedge shaped, broad between the ears and forms into a small rounded, rectangular muzzle with a scissor bite. Their two ears are medium in size and stand triangular on their head. Their two round eyes are large and available in a light hazel to black in color. Their tail is carried up and over their back, covered in hair. Their general body build is rectangular, solid and longer than they are tall. Their double layer coat is soft to the touch, thick in appearance and available in red and black, black and tan, all white, solid cream. White markings may occur.

Temperament

Best suited for a home without small pets, the Shiba Inu can learn to live happily with other dogs and cats that he or she is raised alongside of. This breed is great with children of all ages that they are exposed to while growing up. The Shiba Inu is a quiet dog breed, who is happy, outgoing, active, loving and loyal. They are known to bond extremely close with their owners, and are easy to train. This breed requires a firm and confident owner who is able to remain pack leader at all times. This breed requires a daily walk along with other exercise to truly be happy. They can do well within an apartment setting if properly exercised both mentally and physically. This breed should have early socialization and obedience classes in order to result in a well behaved dog. Naturally, the Shiba Inu is questionable with strangers and will protect your home.

Grooming

This breed requires daily brushing and bathing when needed. Regular professional grooming is recommended. This breed does shed.

Special Notes

Please fully educate yourself about the Shiba Inu prior to adding one to your home to ensure you are able to make a life long commitment both physically and financially for your new family member. This breed requires a properly fenced in area or properly fitting harness and leash at all times while outdoors. The Shiba Inu is generally a healthy breed. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
