Treeing Walker Hound
History
Developed from the bloodlines of the English Foxhound near the 1800's, the Treeing Walker Hound is known for their fast rate of speed and keen sense of sighting, smelling and catching its prey. This breed makes an excellent hunting partner as well as finding unwanted animals within a farm. Today, the Treeing Walker Hound is very popular in the USA.
Appearance
The Treeing Walker Hound is a large breed dog with males and females measuring 20-28 inches in height and weighing 50-70 pounds in weight. Their large head is broad between their ears and forms into a rectangular muzzle with a scissor bite. Their two ears are large, pendant shaped and fall gently alongside of their face. Their eyes are separately greatly, almond in shape and generally a light hazel to dark brown in color. This breed is built tall, lean and active in appearance. Their tail is long in length and tapers to a point at the end, held upwards. Their single layer coat is tight to the skin, demonstrates a healthy natural shine and is available in tri color and bi color patterns of tan and white, or tan, white and black.
Temperament
A true dream dog for those who love hunting, the Treeing Walker Hound has no match when it comes to hunting larger wild animals such as raccoon's and possums outside, both fast and efficiently. This breed is meant for canine homes only due to their intense natural instinct to hunt. Wonderful with children of all ages and people, the Treeing Walker Hound is a generally happy and friendly breed. This breed is meant for active families who understand the Hound type breeds and what they are in for when it comes to owning one. The Treeing Walker Hound is a breed who will always have their nose on a scent they are picking up while outdoors. Daily physical and mental exercise is a must for this breed to remain calm. Early obedience and socialization courses are highly recommended. This breed requires an owner who enjoys being outdoors, has time to train their canine companion, is able to include their dog with their activities and who can remain pack leader at all times, using positive reinforcement training methods.
Grooming
This breed sheds daily. Daily brushing and bathing when needed. Pay close attention to their ears.
